Koprivshtitsa folk festival is probably the largest ethnic and folklore gathering in East Europe! Every five years, in the first half of August, more that 20 000 performers from all over Bulgaria get together to sing, dance, play and stage authentic folk music and customs. 

 

What is really unique about the festival is its authenticity. Performers are not professionals! They are simply transmitting the rich tradition of the their ancestors to the present.

 

Bulgarian folklore enthusiasts from all around the world also come here to perform what they have learned: Americans signing Bulgarian songs without a slight accent; Japanese dancing elaborate Bulgarian chain dances (horo), and many more....  

 

The festival takes place in a picturesque location in the mountain sloops above the town. The settlement of only 2 000 habitants suddenly grows to 50 000 and more for a day and night celebrations of Bulgarian traditional culture.
